At Infinite AI, one thing we implemented on our Computing Team that made everyone's life a lot easier was color coding all cables within the organization. From our time working on Lean Six Sigma projects, specifically the 5S methodology, color is a very fast and effective to distinguish different items and prevent confusion.
All of the cables in datacenters and our offices were assigned a color based on their specific usage. Whenever someone saw a cable, they'd instantly know the purpose without even needing to see the points to which it was connected. As server areas are often tightly enclosed spaces, this saved us from making mistakes during maintenance on multiple occasions. This was a low cost to implement and with color charts on the walls in all computing locations, it was easily understood from the intern to executives. Interestingly, many large companies have moved in this direction and Apple reportedly used our same vendor just a few months prior to us, standardizing all of their cabling to a similar color schema.
